When it comes to finding talent and like-minded individuals, many musicians struggle to ever find bandmates that truly elevate their own visions. Many musicians have to rely on their already established networks, or worse, Craig's List. Started from a passion to help musicians find their full potential, I decided to create Strummer-a social media app for musicians to set up their own profile, advertise what they want from other musicians, and a system that helps expand their network to exactly how they want.
- App Design
- User Experience
Being a musician myself, I often wondered what was the optimal way for people to form a band. Often times, its through friends, at shows, through Instagram or other social platforms, but nothing really concrete. Ultimately, you need to form a group with other musicians you like, and also share a vision with. It takes some people years before they find the right members, and several bands too. So what could mediate this draining process?
Cut through the Middle
The most successful apps are built from their genesis with a knowledge of their target audience and also plenty of knowledge of how their audience would use it. I wanted to create an app that harmonized not only a serious musician community, but also genres, tastes, influences - all the specifics required to make this digital playground as great as it can possibly be.
An app for musicians applies a very unique demographic compared to your typical social app. Each user has very specific skill sets as well as knowledge, and needs other people with their own specific skill sets to complete a vision. The main goal, and ultimate flow of the app needs to help the user distinguish who can be reached based on your specific needs.
Music historically (rock music specifically) has had an affinity for all things mythology, folklore and legend. This may be because of the tendency of the best bands and artists to be treated like sort of legend or unattainable talent. Strummer's identity is derived from folklore and the legend of rock, using mystical visual expressions and colors across every page.
Strummer at its core is a mixture of Tinder and LinkedIn. You showcase yourself for others to match with you, while also expanding your network and finding others you'd like to work with. Strummer's main feature, the "Strum Map", let's you know what kinds of musicians are in your area as well as lets you be discoverable to others.
Expanding your network
Connect your Strummer accound with other music sharing apps such as SoundCloud and Bandcamp to increase your reputability and expand your network.
With recording, you can make yourself more marketable in real time by showcasing what you've written, what you can play and ultimately how good you really are.
